Do you experience dizziness, headaches, sensitivity to light, motion sickness, or even have anxiety in large spaces? These disabling symptoms might be related to Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD). A standard comprehensive eye exam might not be enough to catch it. If you have experienced any of the symptoms listed below, it’s important to contact your eye doctor, who will determine the cause and provide you with a  treatment plan.

Symptoms Associated With Dizziness, Nausea, Motion Sickness and Lightheadedness

When your eyes correct a misalignment, your eye muscles strain. This strain often leads to an array of symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, and disorientation, as well as feelings of lightheadedness.

BVD can also cause nausea, especially while riding in a vehicle, and balance problems. People with BVD may slowly drift to one side while walking, feel their footing is unsure, and walk into objects. Specialized prismatic visual orthotics can relieve these symptoms, usually quickly.

Reading and Learning Disability Symptoms

Your learning and reading can be affected by having misaligned eyes. BVD may affect up to 50% of children diagnosed with reading and other learning problems. That’s why it’s crucial to test for even small amounts of misalignment. Binocular vision disorders can cause eye fatigue while reading, make it hard for you to concentrate, cause words to blend together, and make you lose your place or skip lines while you read. As a routine eye exam can miss even the smallest of alignments, a neuro visual evaluation can detect very small and subtle misalignments.

Head, Neck, and Shoulder Symptoms

Often, patients with BVD experience headaches where they feel an intense pressure at the crown of their head. If you have BVD as a result of Post Concussion Syndrome you will most likely encounter these frequent, intense headaches. Other symptoms of binocular vision dysfunction found in the head, shoulders, and neck include pain in the sinus area or jaw. Severe neck and shoulder pain are often due to a head tilt caused by the misalignment.

Other Symptoms Of BVD

Other symptoms of a binocular vision disorder that you may encounter include:

  • Double vision
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Having a hard time making eye contact
  • Eye strain, which can affect sleep patterns

If you or your child are experiencing any of these symptoms and are not sure if it stems from BVD, contact Dr. Jennifer Catalasan in Austin to schedule a neuro visual eye evaluation. To learn more about BVD and what you can do to get relief, contact us today!
